ACCENT ON TECHNOLOGY
It is abundantly clear that today’s court reporter has to be comfortable both in a computer-integrated courtroom (CIC) and in other realtime reporting environments. Toward this end, the Stenotype Institute fosters the use of realtime-compatible steno machines beginning in theory and carrying through to graduation. All of the student computers are Pentium III machines loaded with Windows 98 or Windows 2000 and Microsoft Word. Realtime writing and other CAT applications use CaseCATalyst as well as a variety of other translation/transcription software. Textbooks for academic courses are complemented by use of CD-ROMs. Standard reference works and periodicals in the library are coupled with Web-based materials on internet-connected computers. COMMUNITY RESOURCESIn addition to its own resources, the Stenotype Institute has access to the libraries of: Coastal Florida School of Law (Jacksonville) Florida Community Colleges of Jacksonville (Jacksonville) Jacksonville University (Jacksonville) Jones Business College (Jacksonville) University of North Florida (Jacksonville) Florida Metropolitan University (Orlando) Valencia Community College (Orlando)
Also, since municipal, county, state, and federal courts are active in Jacksonville (the county seat of Duval County) and Orlando (the county seat of Orange County), field trips are taken to these facilities periodically. HOUSING
While the Stenotype Institute does not have student housing, there are many apartment complexes, condominiums, and rental homes with a five-block or five-mile radius of the two campuses. We maintain up-to-date files on many of the areas’ rental and for-sale properties.
